Lighter Trunk Lift Support Struts

By May 30, 2018August 28th, 2019No Comments

After hearing complaints that the Model 3 trunk is hard to close (my family included). I did some investigation and experimenting and decided that less-powerful lift support struts would help.

The Model 3 OEM lifts are pretty beefy.

I initially spec’d out the identical struts with a lighter force, but custom orders were over $100 each! So I found some 100 lbf off-the-shelf struts that would fit for less than $13 each (at the time this was published).

The replacement struts are a bit smaller with less force and have been working well for me for nearly a year now. I can now easily close the trunk using just the handle inside the lid. I don’t have to slam it closed or risk scratching the paint by touching the, often dirty, trunk lid.

Check out the video below for installation details and a demonstration of the difference and buy a pair for yourself if you’d like to give them a try.
