It's not just you! The hitch cover on the Model Y has multiple clips on all sides that make it surprisingly difficult to remove and easy to damage. We used universal pry tools at first, but found that they were damaging the cover, so we made our own custom solution with these tools.

Useful but could use some refinement

I was excited to receive these hits cover removed tools. I immediately went out back and started using them on the cover, only to discover that it was quite difficult for them to insert into the fine crack between the cover and the bumper. I believe with some fine sanding on the tops create a finer wedge would make these tools a bit more useful. I was however after considerable manipulation able to use the tools to remove the cover and quite happy to discover that a hitch was actually installed that I was unaware of until the removal of the cover.
