In the first week of April 2019, Tesla began the wide release of Automatic Lane Changes while using Navigate on Autopilot (NoAP).
NoAP looks to change lanes for instances like passing slower vehicles, interstate changes, off ramps, and moving to the right when not passing. Previous versions of NoAP required the driver to acknowledge and approve the suggested lane change. This update enables the vehicle to make those changes without user input. This is of course only after the user enables this feature.
In order to implement the automatic lane changes Tesla implemented a neural network which aids with the system learning from the fleet of Tesla's on the road. Many have already reported that within a week their vehicles handling more complex edge cases.
To showcase this new feature we made the following highlight reel showing how NoAP handles a number of scenerios.
We'll be doing more testing of this feature and watching it improve over the coming months so stay tuned!
